Wheatley Park’s Talent and Culture Impress New MP

Henley and Thame’s new MP, Freddie van Meirlo, left Wheatley Park School feeling inspired after attending their end-of-term assembly — a lively event that highlighted the school’s talent, energy, and strong sense of community.
Led by senior students, the assembly featured a series of musical performances, with student bands playing everything from Wilson Pickett’s Mustang Sally to The White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army.
Freddie also learned about a number of student-led initiatives, including a successful Diversity Day, a tree-planting project as part of the National Nature Park programme, and a litter pick for the Great British Spring Clean.
During the visit, Freddie took questions from pupils, who raised a range of issues about education and politics. He welcomed the chance to listen and committed to taking their views back to Parliament.
Speaking afterwards, he said:
“I was genuinely blown away by the energy and talent on display. The students approached the assembly with such joy and confidence — it was clear how much pride they have in their school.
“I was particularly impressed by the inclusive and respectful culture that the headteacher, Tim Martin, and staff have built here. It really came through in how the pupils led the event and supported one another.”
