Freddie van Mierlo MP Meets Young Carers at Watlington Primary School

Freddie van Mierlo, MP for Henley and Thame, visited Watlington Primary School last week to learn more about the important support in place for young carers in the local community.
The school has developed a compassionate and flexible approach to help pupils manage their education alongside their caring responsibilities. Staff spoke about the tailored support systems that ensure young carers are understood, included, and given the tools to thrive.
During the visit, Freddie also heard about the work of local charity Be Free Young Carers, which offers vital respite opportunities for young carers. Through activities such as art, yoga, and day trips, the charity gives young people the chance to relax and focus on their own wellbeing.
The visit highlighted the incredible dedication of staff and volunteers working to support some of the most resilient young people in our community.
Freddie van Mierlo MP said:
“It was a privilege to visit Watlington Primary School and hear about the incredible support being offered to young carers. Young carers are all around us. They go above and beyond everyday for their siblings or parents who have care needs. I was so impressed with the maturity, kindness and thoughtfulness of the young carers I met.
The work being done by both the school and Be Free Young Carers is truly inspiring, providing respite for young carers and space for them to be themselves and simply enjoy being children. It’s clear they are making a real and lasting difference in the lives of these young people.”
