The Government must honour the settlement promises it made to overseas care workers already in the UK. New immigration rules should not apply retrospectively to people who came here in good faith to care for our loved ones. Retrospective rule changes undermine trust in government and are likely to face legal challenges.
Why should people care?
Thousands of care workers came to Britain because we asked them to fill critical staff shortages. They have paid taxes, cared for vulnerable people and built their lives here based on the rules that existed when they arrived. If the Government can change those rules after the event, it damages trust, makes recruitment harder, and risks worsening the social care crisis.
Who is to blame?
The Conservatives created the workforce crisis by failing to invest in social care, leaving providers dependent on overseas recruitment. Now Labour is trying to change the rules retrospectively for the very people who stepped in to help, rather than fixing the underlying problems in the care system.
How will the Liberal Democrats make this better?
The Liberal Democrats would protect the settlement pathway promised to existing care workers, end retrospective rule changes, and tackle the real causes of the workforce crisis by investing in social care, improving pay and conditions, and create a national care service so Britain is less reliant on emergency overseas recruitment.
The Government must honour its promises and stop moving the goalposts. Please sign our petition below.
