Statement from the Oxford Liberal Democrats on Oxford Pride
Oxford Pride announced recently that they do not want any visible political affiliations at this year’s event. We think that is regrettable, but we understand and respect why the decision was taken. In response, we pledge to listen, reflect, and act.
We will miss the opportunity this year to hear directly from Oxfordshire's LGBTQ+ people about what they need from their representatives, and the opportunity to demonstrate our support not just as individuals, but as an institution.
We know that people feel let down by politicians. We know that particularly the Supreme Court ruling, and the government's response to it, has created real concerns for many. We understand that we must help find a fair way forward, where everyone's dignity is protected.
Lib Dems have a proud history of real action to support LGBTQ+ people, from the Liberal Party campaigning against discrimination on sexual orientation, to opposing Section 28, to championing same-sex marriage, right through to our 2024 manfiesto’s call for a fairer and less traumatic approach to the gender recognition process.
Today we pledge that while we can’t be a visible presence on pride day, we will make ourselves visible year-round in campaigning for LGBTQ+ people, in the press, in the council, in parliament. We will be there in spirit, on Pride day and every other day, marching beside you. And we always will. 🌈
