Oxford, 15 May 2025 – MP for Henley and Thame, Freddie van Mierlo, received a delightful surprise this week when he discovered that local artist Jo Wace had painted his portrait — captured from a photo she snapped while he was out canvassing during the 2024 General Election campaign.

The painting, a striking and joyful piece in Jo Wace’s distinctive style, is currently on display as part of Oxfordshire Art Weeks, the county’s annual celebration of local artistic talent. Jo Wace, known for her textured, expressive work, took the photo of Freddie when he was chatting with residents on the doorstep — a candid moment now immortalised on canvas.

Freddie said:

“It was such a surprise to see my face looking back at me from Jo’s beautiful canvas — and such a huge honour. Oxfordshire is bursting with creative talent and Art Weeks is a wonderful way to discover it. I’d encourage everyone to get out and visit as many exhibitions as they can. You never know what — or who — you’ll find on the walls!”

Jo Wace is exhibiting her work in St Edmund Campion R C Church, 2 Watcombe Rd, Watlington as part of Art Weeks, her portraits will be displayed there until 18 May, but the festival itself runs until the 26th of the month.

Art Weeks offers a unique opportunity to explore artists’ studios, meet makers, and purchase local, original art. Whether you're interested in painting, sculpture, jewellery, ceramics, or photography, there’s something to inspire everyone.
