Freddie van Mierlo, MP for Henley and Thame, has welcomed the submission of a major planning application to redevelop the Warneford Hospital site in Oxford, a step he has long campaigned for and highlighted in Parliament during the Second Reading of the Mental Health Bill back in May.

The application, submitted by Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust, proposes the demolition of outdated buildings and the creation of a modern mental health hospital and research centre, alongside a new University of Oxford graduate college. The redevelopment promises significant investment in mental health care infrastructure, education, and research for Oxfordshire and the wider region.

While recognising this as a vital step forward for the site and the services it provides, Freddie van Mierlo stressed the importance of a thorough and transparent planning process, ensuring that the views of local residents and statutory consultees are properly addressed.

The MP also emphasised that funding for the redevelopment has not yet been secured in full. He committed to continuing to support the Trust as it works to finalise the necessary financial arrangements to bring the project to fruition.

Commenting on the application, Freddie said:

"This is a hugely welcome step forward for Warneford Hospital and for everyone who relies on its services. For too long, the facilities at Warneford have not reflected the excellence of the care and research taking place within them. I have consistently called for meaningful investment in Warneford, including raising the issue in Parliament earlier this year.

That said, it is essential that this redevelopment moves forward through a robust and transparent planning process. I encourage local residents and stakeholders to share their views, and I expect those views, including environmental and infrastructure concerns, to be properly considered and addressed.

Funding has not yet been fully secured, and I will continue to support the Trust as it works to finalise the necessary financial arrangements. I am committed to seeing this project delivered in a way that benefits patients, staff, researchers and the wider community for generations to come.”
