Freddie van Mierlo, MP for Henley and Thame, has secured a Westminster Hall debate on Tuesday to highlight the importance of National Trails, particularly the Ridgeway and Thames Path, both of which run through the constituency of Henley and Thame, and to call for urgent support to maintain and protect them.

The Ridgeway and Thames Path are two of the most historic and well-loved trails in the country, offering residents and visitors access to the countryside, promoting physical and mental wellbeing, and supporting the local economy through tourism and recreation.

A key focus of the debate will be the closure of the Marsh Lock Horsebridge between Henley and Shiplake, a key part of the Thames Path. The bridge has been closed since 2023, cutting off a popular riverside route used daily by walkers, runners and cyclists.

Freddie will also raise national concerns about the state of trail funding. He has met with National Trails UK and a trustee of the Ridgeway to hear how falling investment is putting the future of these important paths at risk.

Freddie van Mierlo said

“The Ridgeway and Thames Path are loved by many people locally. The Ridgeway is thought to be Britain’s oldest road and these trails connect communities, encourage healthy lifestyles and boost our local economy.

The closure of Marsh Lock Horsebridge has been a real loss for the community, cutting off a key link on the Thames Path.

I am proud to represent such beautiful and historic trails and I will continue to fight for the funding and care they deserve.”

The Westminster Hall debate is scheduled for Tuesday 9th September
