The Liberal Democrat Group at Cherwell District Council has announced that Councillor David Hingley is stepping down as group leader and therefore as Leader of the Council.

Councillor Hingley has taken the decision to step away from the leadership role in order to focus more time on his professional commitments, while continuing to serve as an elected member of the Council and an integral member of the Liberal Democrat group.

Councillor Hingley was re-elected last week to Cherwell District Council for the Adderbury, Bloxham and Bodicote ward with a clear majority. The Liberal Democrats also gained four new councillors across the district.

During his time as Leader, Councillor Hingley has overseen a number of significant achievements for the Council, including the early introduction of kerbside glass recycling, accelerating progress on the new Local Plan which is now with the Planning Inspectorate for approval, reducing council debt by £32 million, and securing the future of Banbury Museum.

Following a meeting of the Liberal Democrat Group at the weekend, Councillor Lesley McLean was elected as Group Leader and Councillor Chris Brant was elected as Deputy Group Leader.

At the Annual Council meeting on 20 May, Councillors Lesley McLean and Chris Brant will be put forward by the Liberal Democrat Group for election by Full Council as Leader and Deputy Leader respectively.

The Liberal Democrat Group thanked Councillor Hingley for his strong leadership, commitment and service to residents across Cherwell, and said he will continue to play an important role within the council.

Cllr David Hingley said; “I’m extremely proud to have served Cherwell as the first ever Liberal Democrat Leader of the Council for the past two years. It has been a real honour, and while I am stepping back from the leadership I am looking forward to serving in a different capacity. Following last week’s elections, I will continue to represent Adderbury, Bloxham, Bodicote and Milton with the dedication these special villages deserve.

"I’d like to thank all the members of my administration and the staff of the council for their commitment to Cherwell and their support and I know that our district will continue onwards in very safe hands.”

As the largest group on Cherwell District Council, the Liberal Democrats are committed to continuing to deliver for residents, strengthening local services, and providing stable and effective leadership across the authority, ensuring good value, high-quality services, and that every penny of public money is spent wisely.
