Liberal Democrat MP for Henley and Thame, Freddie van Mierlo, has welcomed the publication of the official Section 19 Flood Investigation Report into the devastating floods that hit Wheatley in September 2024 — and is demanding urgent action to ensure the recommendations are implemented.

The release of a new short film, which features dramatic archive footage from the day of the floods, starkly illustrates the growing risks posed by climate change and the consequences of inaction on flood prevention. Roads became rivers, homes were inundated, and residents were left to pick up the pieces after an intense and sudden deluge overwhelmed local infrastructure.

The Section 19 Report, published by Oxfordshire County Council, confirms that surface water runoff, blocked drains and an overloaded sewer system contributed significantly to the flooding. It makes a series of recommendations to reduce the risk of future events.

Freddie van Mierlo said:

“The dramatic footage from Wheatley last September speaks for itself. This was not just freak weather — it was a wake-up call.

“The official report confirms what residents have been saying for years: the infrastructure isn’t fit for purpose, and climate change is making the risks worse. What matters now is action.

“I'm pleased that Oxfordshire County Council have already started to flush the drains more regularly but the two local councils, The Environment Agency and Thames Water must move quickly to implement the other recommendations. The community cannot afford another year of delay or uncertainty.”

Mr van Mierlo praised the work of local campaigners and councillors, including County Councillor Tim Bearder and Chair of Wheatley Parish Council, Alison Sercombe who have consistently raised concerns and demanded stronger flood defences and drainage maintenance.

“Wheatley has shown incredible resilience. Now it’s time for the authorities to show the same urgency and commitment in protecting the village from future floods.”
