Bicester MP puts London Road underpass petition to the House of Commons

Today in the House of Commons, MP for Bicester and Woodstock, Calum Miller, formally presented a petition signed by 4,526 residents calling for a fully accessible London Road level crossing in Bicester – continuing access for cars, cyclists and pedestrians.

The petition follows a month of intense community campaigning, during which Calum held a Market Stall on Sheep Street, with dozens of residents queuing to sign the petition and volunteers taking these around their communities to collect signatures. Many came into town specifically to support this petition, reflecting how deeply this issue resonates with the local community.

Calum Miller MP for Bicester and Woodstock said:

“People in Bicester are understandably frustrated. The town has known that the level crossing would be an issue for nearly a decade, yet previous Governments have failed to secure the future of London Road.

“Today, I have brought the voices of over 4,500 local people to the heart of our democracy. In the next eight weeks, East West Rail will submit final proposals to the Government – and it is vital Ministers recognise just how crucial this is to Bicester’s future.

“Traffic congestion is already a serious problem. Residents saw the reality of a fully closed road just recently when there were sewage works for 10 days – the result caused carnage across the roads of Bicester.

“I’m extremely grateful to every person who took the time to sign my petition and to the brilliant volunteers who campaigned tirelessly to gather an outstanding number of names. We have made clear and significant process so far and it is crucial we continue to keep the pressure on the Government and East West Rail to provide the town with the only viable option.”

Carole Hetherington, Chair of the Langford Village Community Association commented:

“People were coming on a mission to seek us out and sign this petition. I knew there was a strength of feeling about this but the campaign over the past few weeks has been extraordinary. Calum has been a loud and consistent voice for our community. We have been trying to get answers to this problem for years, knowing it was coming, we got increasingly concerned there wasn’t a proper solution agreed upon.

“After years of campaigning and concentrated hard work over the past month getting more signatures for this petition, I was so glad to see it taken to the very top today, at the House of Commons. From what Calum tells us about his meetings with the Rail Minister and East West Rail, I am starting to get hopeful we will get the accessible underpass we need to avoid traffic chaos in Bicester.”
