Bicester and Woodstock MP will meet Minister to push for better deal for pubs
After meeting several hospitality business owners across the constituency of Bicester and Woodstock, who are all under increasing pressure, Calum Miller MP asked a Minister to meet him to discuss how the Government could help support the industry better.
During Business and Trade questions, Calum Miller MP cited two publicans who are facing multiple challenges and asked the Minister to meet with them to discuss how the Government can support them. She agreed and set a date in December.
Calum Miller MP commented afterwards:
“Great pubs are the lifeblood and fabric of our communities. More than amenities and employment, they also provide a place to socialise with our neighbours and form bonds.
“Many landlords are struggling to keep the doors open due to rising costs. We need to support pubs and the wider hospitality industry better. That’s why the Liberal Democrats are calling on the Chancellor to cut VAT in next week’s budget to help ease the financial pressures without passing on costs to the customers.
“I am glad the Minister took up my request to meet and I look forward to introducing her to two fantastic landlords in our constituency.”
Becky Sumner, landlady of The Red Lion, said:
"Despite growing support from our community, soaring costs and outdated taxation mean pubs like ours are being pushed to the brink. Eight pubs a week are closing because the system is stacked against us.
“Without cuts to VAT, business rates and beer duty, the heart of our communities and vital jobs will continue to disappear."
Donna Byrom, landlady of The Oxfordshire Yeoman, commented:
“During my working life in hospitality, the trade has changed dramatically. It has become a dying trade, and progressively harder to make a living out of running a small independent Public House.
“Working Hours and Minimum wage expectations for staffing are but a small part of this problem along with increased rates and licences. There seems to be no grants available and it's no wonder what used to be the Hub of any village or town seem to be dwindling.
“Pubs really are more than just a place to drink and eat, they are the heart of their community and give young, old and families a meeting place to be sociable and learn about what is going on in their area, Pubs offer support and care for their community, often being the only place that offers a warm welcoming environment for many. It's crucial we keep going for the communities.”
