Ending violence against women and girls
Ending Violence Against Women and Girls
Violence against women and girls (VAWG) devastates lives and communities. Calum Miller is working in Parliament to stop it, and the Liberal Democrats have a clear plan to back survivors and prevent abuse.
Challenging Government
On 15 December 2025, Calum attended the House of Commons debate on the Government's VAWG Strategy. He pressed Jess Phillips, Minister for Safeguarding and VAWG, on how perpetrators exploit the family courts and the Child Maintenance Service to keep abusing their victims. Read Calum's remarks and the Minister's reply.
Protecting Victims
In September, Calum raised a constituent's case directly with the Minister for Victims. He then met her to discuss how the Government can better protect victims of domestic abuse in the family courts.
Prevention First
Stopping abuse before it starts matters. Calum supported an Early Day Motion highlighting the role of relationship education in preventing VAWG. He is also an ambassador for White Ribbon, the charity engaging men and boys to end violence against women and girls.
Global Action
As the Liberal Democrat spokesperson for foreign affairs, Calum speaks up for women and girls worldwide. He has raised the widespread use of sexual violence in Sudan. He has also urged the Government to ensure Syria's new leadership protects the rights of all, including women and minorities.
Lib Dem Plan
The Liberal Democrats want police forces and support services to protect women and girls effectively. We will:
- Fund support: provide sustainable funding for services helping survivors of VAWG and domestic abuse.
- Tackle "honour"-based abuse: introduce a statutory definition, better support services, and training so police, social care and education professionals can spot it and respond.
- Stop reoffending: expand high-quality perpetrator programmes in domestic abuse cases to prevent further harm.
- Build specialist teams: set up VAWG taskforces in every police force, working alongside frontline women's services.
- Make reporting safe: offer anonymous reporting options and place VAWG and domestic abuse specialists in every 999 operator assistance centre.
- Change attitudes: launch a Home Office-led national awareness campaign that busts myths, points people to support, and promotes the new taskforces.
