Liz Adams - A strong voice for Banbury

Liz is the Liberal Democrat candidate for the new Banbury constituency.

“I am honoured to be standing as a Lib Dem to be the new member of Parliament for Banbury. This is the first General Election on the new constituency boundaries," said Liz Adams.

"Across the north Cherwell area the Lib Dem team is growing. We’ve made stellar district council gains in Adderbury, Bloxham & Bodicote and Cropredy, Sibfords & Wroxton, along with a Lib Dem elected to Banbury Town Council and increased vote share in Banbury Town.

"The new constituency now also includes West Oxfordshire district council areas with a strong Lib Dem vote such as Charlbury, the Bartons, and our recent council ward gain of Chadlington & Churchill.

"I have knocked on hundreds of doors across the constituency and people are clear that they are ready for a change from the Conservative chaos and incompetence. I am standing to give people a real alternative and I hope that after hearing my story and why I want to represent them, that people will see they have a chance to be represented by someone who genuinely cares, someone who will listen to them, and someone who will be a fearless voice to stand up for them in parliament.”

Fighting for our NHS

The Conservatives have failed our NHS.

Waiting lists are too long, health indicators are going backwards, and staff are demoralised. Dentistry is in crisis with many unable to access services.

Liz is fighting to protect local services and give them proper investment.

Liz previously worked as a dispensing assistant in a pharmacy and has a keen interest in tackling the issue of antibiotic resistance. Liz’s experience in the pharmacy and working alongside other health professionals to deliver services has given her insight into some of the pressures on the NHS and understanding how the patient experience can be improved across services.

Environment & Water Pollution

The Conservative government has failed to protect our environment. They have allowed Thames Water to dispense sewage into our rivers without consequence. Liz is campaigning to prevent local residents from having to pay eyewatering increases in bills despite the lack of effective investment from Thames Water in preventing sewage pollution. The Conservatives have also allowed the UK biodiversity crisis to get worse. Liz is an avid hiker and has been involved in Scouting for many years, both as a scout herself and as a parent helper. Liz wants to protect our environment for our children and many generations to come to be able to enjoy.

Cost of Living

Energy Bills, food prices and the cost of living have skyrocketed. The Conservatives have proven themselves to be economically incompetent, with Liz Truss’ mini budget having made the situation far worse. People are really struggling and they need MPs in government who will make things easier for people, not MPs who will not speak up and who will go along with the next gamble on a soundbite policy written to please vested interests. Liz built her way up from having been a single mum living in a council flat on benefits, and she knows just how tough some families are finding things. The current level of child poverty in the UK is unacceptable for one of the richest countries in the world. Liz knows what measures will provide much needed help and support for families to be able to get back on their feet and she will be a strong voice in parliament to fight for those who are struggling.

A Community Champion

Liz and the team outside Castle Quay

The Liberal Democrats are the party of community. In an increasingly unsafe world, the UK faces serious existential threats such as war in Europe, the climate crisis, and increasingly uncertain risks from things like future pandemics and cyber security. The answer to many of these big issues is community. We saw in the pandemic, the power of the local community. Neighbours helping with deliveries to vulnerable people, supporting key workers, and establishing what resources were needed. Building strong and resilient communities, where people are supported, not socially isolated, where clean public and green spaces can be enjoyed, and where local people have a real voice, is the vision that Liz and the Lib Dem team are working for.

Liz will be a community champion. She will be accessible to local people. Liz has knocked on hundreds of doors and will continue to do so regularly. People will know that if they contact Liz, they will get a response and a genuine listening ear. Liz is working closely with our fantastic team of local councillors. With the Lib Dems now running both Cherwell and West Oxfordshire District Councils, the new Banbury Constituency will really benefit from a Lib Dem MP who will work closely with this team.

Liz will ensure that new housing is being built for actual local need and not solely for developer profits. As someone who is a member of ‘generation rent’ herself and has struggled to get on the property ladder, Liz backs that we need to build more houses. However, new housing needs to be appropriate, affordable, and environmentally efficient. It needs to be in areas where it will not fundamentally change the character of a town or village. It needs to have considered the impact on local infrastructure, flooding and biodiversity, and accompanying investment into local services must not only be demanded but enforced. New housing must enhance our communities not divide or destroy them.

Liz will fight to protect local community services, especially our health services. It is not right that people should have to travel to Oxford or elsewhere to access basic services. Liz will fight for investment into the Horton and will champion the Lib Dem plan to recruit more dentists and invest in dental services to prevent the dire situation where people, including children, can no longer access NHS dental services. Liz will also champion investment into youth services. Statutory funding for youth services is something that Liz has campaigned on for many years. There is no better investment than investing in our children and their future. Liz will also work for improved funding for local amenities, such as our libraries and arts centres. Liz is a huge supporter of funding for arts and has attended stage school and dance school herself, as well as having had drum lessons at school and playing in a band. Liz recognises the benefits that having access to the arts and sports can have for people of all ages and will champion these opportunities for Banbury.

Liz will be an experienced and effective voice for the new Banbury constituency in Parliament. Liz is a Family and Education law barrister and regularly represents some of the most vulnerable people in society. Liz wrote and campaigned for updated Lib Dem party policy on tackling domestic abuse in both 2013 and 2021 and presented the policies in her speeches to national conference, with both policies passing. Liz will not be afraid to speak up in Parliament and will not be someone who stays quiet on the backbenches.
