Rethink the Greater Oxford Council Proposal

Liberal Democrats across Oxfordshire oppose the Government’s decision to create three unitary councils across the county. We are calling on the Prime Minister to reconsider this decision in light of widespread public opposition.

The proposed Greater Oxford Council would absorb 48 rural parishes into the city, leaving many residents concerned that their local communities and green spaces are being sacrificed for urban expansion and unrestricted development.

Rather than delivering savings and better local services, the three-council proposal would duplicate services across Oxfordshire, making local government more expensive, less efficient, and more complicated.

We urge the Government to reconsider the proposal announced on 16 July 2026 and work with local councils and communities to develop a fair, financially sustainable solution that reflects the views of residents across Oxfordshire.
