CLEAN UP ILLEGAL WASTE

The illegal waste near Kidlington is a serious environmental concern. Our petition is calling for the government and the Environment Agency to clean up the waste and prevent an environmental disaster.

The discovery of the UK’s largest illegal landfill near Kidlington has shocked residents. It is located metres from the River Cherwell and, with river levels rising and the site at risk of flooding, there is an imminent risk of contaminating the river and soil. There is also a risk of fire in a critical site just adjacent to the A34 road. This is an environmental catastrophe in the making.

The cost of cleaning up the site is estimated at over £25 million. The local council does not have the resources to fund this and local residents should not be expected to bear the costs in their council tax bills when the responsibility sits with the Environment Agency.

We call on the Environment Agency to act urgently to make the site safe and prevent waste from washing into the Cherwell.

We further call on the government to release funds to clean up the site and direct the Environment Agency to begin this process without delay.
